ZevenOS is a German Linux distribution based on Ubuntu[2] and focuses on a fast and easy to use system while mimicking the look and feel of BeOS. It is intended to work also on older laptops and computers with low CPU speed and memory. The current stable version of ZevenOS is the 6.0 release (31 December 2014) and is based on Ubuntu's 14.04 LTS release.[3]

In addition to common applications, ZevenOS and Neptune features a lot of multimedia tools and is suitable for media playback and ship with a full set of codecs as well as the flashplayer.[4][5]

Neptune former name ZevenOS-Neptune[6] is based on Debian-"Stable". It ships with a current Kernel, more drivers, and modern hardware support.[7] Unlike ZevenOS it implements a modern KDE 4 desktop with customized theme and settings. It is optimized to run from USB stick. The release of ZevenOS-Neptune version 2.0 and 2.5 shipped in two editions - Full edition (with KDE SC) and Minimal edition (with LXDE).

Neptune[8] includes a current KDE Plasma Workspace, Chromium, VLC, Amarok, LibreOffice etc.

The former ZevenOS-Neptune "Minimal-Edition" for minor system-requirements and smaller iso < 700 MB included PCManFM, DeaDBeef, Gnome-Mplayer (with Mplayer2), Abiword, Iceweasel and Icedove.

Since version 3.0 Neptune is exclusively built for 64-bit CPUs.[9] The current stable version is Neptune 4.1[10][11]
