Zeltiq Aesthetics Inc. (NASDAQ: ZLTQ) is a global medical equipment supplier. The company's products include the CoolSculpting System which is used to do lipolysis, and Cryolipolysis as well as non-invasive technologies for plastic surgery. Cryolipolysis is an owned trademark of the company and it refers to equipment to destroy fat cells.[2][3] The company has clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. As of June, 2011, there are 629 CoolSculpting Systems in the world with 134,000 CoolSculpting procedures having been sold to physician customers in 46 international markets.[4] In 2014, the company’s proprietary product, CoolSculpting, was named as the annual Beauty Choice Awards in the industry by NewBeauty magazine.[5] Among the companies with which Zeltiq Aesthetics competes are Lumenis, Syneron, Cutera, Solta Medical, Venus Concept, Cynosure, Hironic, and Palomar Medical Technologies.[6][7]

Background

The company was incorporated in 2005 by two founding investors including Advanced Technology Ventures (ATV) and Frazier Healthcare Ventures (FHV). The company was born from research named Cryolipolysis conducted by Drs. Dieter Manstein[8] and R. Rox Anderson at the Wellman Center for Photomedicine at Massachusetts General Hospital, which is a teaching affiliate for Harvard Medical School. Since then, the company has been engaged in developing and supplying technologies and products for weight loss. The first CEO of the company is Mitch Levinson, who is also one of the founders.[9] The company was formerly known as Juniper Medical Inc. and changed its name to Zeltiq Aesthetics in 2007.[2]

The company develops and manufacturers its products through its proprietary controlled cooling technology platform. It generates revenue mainly from the sales of its CoolSculpting System products.[10] It has a market capitalization (As of March 2014) of $681.69 million with an enterprise value of $661.99 million.[1]

In February, 2014, to present the company’s proprietary controlled cooling platform, it took part in the Leerink Global Healthcare Conference in New York City.[11]
