In July 1994 the government of Zambia passed a Telecommunications Act that led to the splitting up of the Post and Telecommunications Corporation into two separate companies: the Zambia Postal Services Corporation (Zampost), and the Zambia Telecommunications Company, or Zamtel.
Zamtel is the leading telecom in Zambia. The company provides a modern Internet service through Zamtel On-line, founded in 1997, including digital subscriber lines (DSL) and wireless access.

In 2010 the Zambian government sold 75% shares to a Libyan company LAPGREEN NETWORKS. In November 2011 the newly elected PF government set out an inquiry into the sale of Zamtel because they think it was sold fraudulently by the previous MMD government. The enquiry ruled in favour of the government. In January 2012, President Sata reversed the $257m deal and Zambia seized control of Zamtel.
