Zalingei or Zalinjay is a town in western Sudan, and is capital of the state of Central Darfur. It is known for its white cheese Gibna Bayda. As of 2009 it had an estimated population of 27,258.[1]

Zalingei is an important hub for humanitarian agencies working in the troubled Jebel Marra area to the east, and is itself the location of a large number of people displaced from their homes by fighting and other problems elsewhere in Darfur. It is worth mentioning that the number of displaced persons in Zalingei surpasses the number of its residents.

Zalingei also has 3 major Internally Displaced Person (IDP) camps in its vicinity. They are Hassahissa, Khamsa Dagayeg and Hamediya IDP camps in addition to a recently formed Alsalam IDP camp which is north east of Hamediya IDP camp.

Zalingei is also known by its richness in soil fertility.The main income for the community is based on farming.The community starts their cultivation mainly in the rainy season taking advantage of the natural irrigation.The rainy season in Zalingei starts in mid June and ends by October.The main income generating crops in the area for the community is Millet,Sorghoum and Ground Nuts.

The town is home to the University of Zalingei.[2]

Climate

Köppen-Geiger climate classification system classifies its climate as hot semi-arid (BSh). The daytime temperatures are always hot and are the hottest in March, April and May when they may reach 40 °C (104 °F). The rainy season is in the middle of the year when the temperature difference between day and night is the least, when the daytime temperatures are cooler but still hot and is the coolest in August. On the other hand, the nighttime temperatures are the coolest from November to February, when the temperature difference between day and night is the most, and nighttime temperatures drop to as low as 6 °C (43 °F).
