The Zakir Hussain College of Engineering and Technology (ZHCET) is a college which is among many colleges within the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) in Uttar Pradesh, India. It is named after Zakir Hussain, President of India (1967–69), who is an alumnus of AMU and was its Vice-Chancellor from 1948 to 1956. The foundation was laid on 21 November 1938.

Academics

The college offers courses at the undergraduate, postgraduate and research level. The language of instruction in all courses is English. There are eleven associated academic departments:

Department of Architecture

The Department of Architecture was established in the year 1993 & the First batch graduated in the year 1998. The Department is under the faculty of Engineering and Technology and runs as per the norms of the Council of Architecture and AICTE. [1]

Department of Chemical Engineering

The idea of the creation of the Department of Chemical Engineering at A.M.U. was born with the visit of His Highness Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al-Nahyan of the UAE in 1975 as a beginning towards the larger goal of establishing an Institute of Petroleum Studies. As a first step in this direction, the approval of the UGC was obtained for the creation of the Department in the fifth Five Year Plan and it came into existence in 1978, when the first five year undergraduate course in Chemical Engineering started with an intake of thirty students (now it is a four year degree course as everywhere). A Post-graduate Diploma in Petroleum Processing was started in the Department in 1987, which was upgraded to full-fledged degree in M.Sc. Engg. (Petroleum Processing) in 1988. The course was, however later transferred to the Department of Petroleum Studies in 1993. There was no PG programme in the Department for about 06 years.

A Masters programme of M.Tech. (Chemical Engineering) was started in 1999 with specialization in Process Modeling and Simulation. Another specialization, "Computer Aided Design of Process Plant has also been approved by the University. However, this specialization could not be started due to shortage of teaching staff.[2]

Department of Civil Engineering

Many research projects sponsored by A.I.C.T.E., U.G.C., D.S.T., C.S.I.R., D.R.D.O., C.S.T. (U.P.), Ministry of Environment and Forest and Indian Oil Corporation, Govt. of India have been successfully completed in the past. The faculty members have published significant number of Research papers in International Journals, National Journals and the Proceedings of various International and National Seminars, Conferences, Symposia and Workshops.

At the under graduate level, the Civil Engineering Department offers B. Tech. (Civil) course and at the post graduate level M. Tech. course is offered in three major fields of specialization viz. Structural Engineering, Hydraulic Structures, and Environmental Engineering. At the Doctoral level, the Department offers Ph. D. in Structural Engineering, Hydraulic Structures, Environmental Engineering and Geotechnical Engineering.

Zakir Husain college of Engineering and Technology is one among the seven institutes identified by M.H.R.D., Government of India, for the upgradation to the level of Indian Institute of Technology (I.I.T.). [3]

Department of Computer Engineering

The department of Computer Engineering was created in the Faculty of Engineering & Technology by the president of India in his capacity as the visitor of the Aligarh Muslim University vide letter no. F.7.22 (C.E.)/91-NRO/ED-1352 dated 13.06.1991 from the Ministry of Human Resource Development. The Department is currently running a B.Tech. Programme in Computer Engineering and an M.Tech. Programme in Computer Science and Engineering with specialization in Software Engineering. [4]

Department of Electrical Engineering

The department of Electrical Engineering (EED) was established in 1935 with an intake of 20 students for certificate courses and subsequently started Bachelors Degree programme in 1940 and produced its first graduate in 1943. A new phase of major developments in the department started during third five-year plan when the intake was raised to 90.

Faculty of Engineering & Technology, was sanctioned and started in 1964 with an intake of 10 students. During the fourth five-year plan, the number of postgraduate course increased to three with a total intake of 25 students with scholarship. The department was bifurcated in 1988 with creation of a separate Deptt. of Electronics Engg. In effect 60 UG and 34 PG (With two streams; Power System & Drives and Instrumentation & Control) intake were left with the EED.

The first Ph.D. in the Faculty of Engineering & Technology, Aligarh Muslim University was produced by this department in 1977. Since then a good number of Ph.D students are enrolled and successfully complete their studies.[5]

Department of Electronics Engineering

The Department of Electronics Engineering was formally created in February 1988 on a proposal submitted by the Faculty of Engineering and Technology, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), Aligarh, to the University Grants Commission. In its original recommendations, the Faculty had submitted proposals for a comprehensive Programme in Electronics Engineering catering to the requirements in the area at the Undergraduate (UG), Postgraduate (PG), and research levels. These proposals were basically made in view of the national requirements in the thrust area of electronics, and after taking into consideration the availability of a strong infrastructure in this area at the Aligarh Muslim University. The expert committee of the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), Northern Region, visited the university on 19 August 1986 and examined the proposals for the creation of new department.[6]

Department of Mechanical Engineering

The Department of Mechanical Engineering of the Aligarh Muslim University was established about sixty years back. Ph.D., M.Tech., B.Tech. & B.E. (Evening) programmes are being offered. Ninety two students in B.Tech. and forty two in the three M.Tech. Courses (Thermal Engineering, Industrial & Production Engg. and Machine Design) are admitted every year on the basis of written competitive tests on all India basis. The department offers 85 UG & 33 PG Courses in the various disciplines of mechanical engineering. [7]

Department of Petroleum Studies

The idea of establishing an Institute of Petroleum Technology at Aligarh Muslim University was conceived following the visit of His Highness Sheikh Zaid Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, President of UAE who visited Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh on 1 January 1975. A sum of US $ 2 lacs was also contributed by H.H. Sheikh Zaid for the Institute. In view of the above and realizing the importance of the job oriented courses and future demand of the country in the area of Petroleum Studies, the University submitted a proposal for the Establishment of the Petroleum Institute to the University Grants Commission, Govt. of India, New Delhi.

Book bank

The Library of Z.H. College of Engineering & Technology, AMU Aligarh was established in 1938 with about 300 books. Apart from the main College Library, the College has departmental libraries/ seminars located in all departments of studies of the Engineering College. The Book bank Section of the Library was started in 1964 to provide books on hire basis to all UG students. The College Library is placed in a two-storied building with a total covered area of about 1000 Sq. m. The College Library is run with services of 15 technical staff, one LDC, two Office Attendants, one MTS. The College Library is a member of INDEST Consortium (Level 3) sponsored by AICTE.

The College Library caters to the need of more than 2000 UG, PG students and research scholars apart from about 225 teaching faculty.

The college was ranked 60 out of the top 75 Engineering Colleges of India in 2012 by Outlook India.[9] It was ranked 51st in top 100 Engineering Schools of India by Dataquest in 2005.[10]
