"Your Love" is a song recorded by American singer Nicole Scherzinger for her second studio album Big Fat Lie (2014). The song was released on May 30, 2014 by RCA Records as the lead single marking its first release since signing a deal with Sony Music Entertainment. It was written and produced by Terius "The-Dream" Nash and Christopher "Tricky" Stewart with additional production was provided by Bart Schoudel.
Background
Following the end of the ninth series of the British edition of The X Factor, Scherzinger shifted her focus to her second studio album.[1] In March, the singer released "Boomerang" as the lead single of the project; however, upon release, the song failed to garner enough airplay, although it did have top ten success in the United Kingdom, peaking at number six on the UK Singles Chart.[2] According to Scherzinger, will.i.am served as the executive producer of the album and worked with songwriter/producers Afro Jack, Dallas Austin, Toby Gad and Sandy Vee, who produced "Boomerang".[3] Whilst planning to release the new album worldwide in November, Scherzinger unveiled that she had doubts to return to the tenth series as the promotion for the album would clash with the live stages of the singing competition.[4] Ultimately she decided to return as a judge, putting the release on hold.[4][5]
In February 2014, it was announced that Scherzinger had signed a multi-album deal with Sony Records imprint label RCA Records. For the second album Scherzinger collaborated with The-Dream and Tricky Stewart, who executive produced the record whilst a lead single would be released in the summer.[6] On May 20 Scherzinger revealed via Twitter that she was filming a music video for her new single on a Malibu beach.[7] Three days later Scherzinger confirmed the song's title and announced that it would premiere on radio on May 29.[8] The song marks Scherzinger's first release since signing a deal with Sony Records.[8] On the same day a 18-second snippet of the song was leaked on the internet featuring a part of the first verse and the pre-chorus.[9] The singer debuted the full song on her official SoundCloud account on May 29.[10]
Composition
"Your Love" is a pop[11] and dance[12] song with elements of house music,[13] which runs for a duration of four minutes and five seconds. Built on a 1990s-inspired "bright piano-led beat"[13] the song's instrumentation also contains "synth trumpets".[14] Throughout the song Scherzinger adopts "sultry" vocals and uses "filtered near-whispers and moans."[13] The song begins with a rave piano-driven beat with Scherzinger repeating "yeah" and "woo".[14] During the verse's Scherzinger references Michael Tyson and MC Hammer.[14] The song's chorus comprises a "do-do-do-do-do" vocal hook.[15] Lyrically, Scherzinger sings how her man's love makes her feel.[11]
Critical reception
The song received generally positive reviews from most music critics. Jason Lipshutz of Billboard described "Your Love" as an "irresistible pop track" that anyone "could reasonably add to their ongoing 'Summer Jams' playlist." Lipshutz went on to praise the song's chorus as the "main appeal" of the song.[11] Robbie Daw of Idolator called it her first truly great single since "Don't Hold Your Breath" (2011), also naming it "infectious".[16] Popjustice named it "a triumph" and "a ridiculously elegant single: precision-tooled for pop supremacy but sparsely produced and as a result rather more stylish than the smack round the head with a sack of spanners that was 'Poison' (2010)."[17] Nolan Feeney of Time magazine praised the song, calling it "a knockout", noting that "the track's catchy 'doo-doo-doo' chorus is well on its way to lodging itself in unsuspecting heads this summer."[18] However, Melissa Redman of Renowned for Sound was more critical with the song's lyrics and melody, pointing out that "if Scherzinger was looking for a comeback for her solo career, this was the wrong song to do it with."[19]
Commercial performance
"Your Love" made its first chart appearance on the South Korean International Gaon Single Chart at number 96 for the week ending June 8, 2014, due to digital download sales of 2,044.[20] In Australia, the song debuted and peaked at number fifty one on the Australian Singles Chart on June 21, 2014. It marked her first chart appearance in over three years and her tenth solo song to enter the top 100.[21] In the United Kingdom, "Your Love" debuted and peaked at number six on the UK Singles Chart on July 20, 2014, selling just over 41,000 copies before falling to number eighteen.[22] "Your Love debuted at number 100 on the France Singles Chart,[23] and peaked at number 22, making it Scherzinger's highest charting single in France as a solo artist.[24]
Music video
The music video for "Your Love" was shot on May 19, 2014, in Malibu, California.[25] The music video was directed by Dawn Shadforth and filmed on a beach.[26] Scherzinger took to Twitter to confirm that she was filming the music video, writing: "Beautiful day on the beach! On the set of my new music video for my first single... [coming soon]," along with a short video.[25] Pictures showing Scherzinger wearing two bridal-inspired outfits were leaked onto the internet the same day.[27]
The video depicts Nicole singing on the beach, with beautiful scenery shown and dances taking place reminiscent of a Caribbean setting. The video ends with Scherzinger sitting wrapped in a beach towel on the sand, with fire and lighting effects in a small forest appearing bright and colorful.
Live performances
Scherzinger first performed "Your Love" on the British chat show Alan Carr: Chatty Man on June 13, 2014.[28] At the Isle of MTV festival in Malta, Scherzinger performed "Your Love" along with a number of songs which included songs from her former group The Pussycat Dolls. She performed while wearing black leather shorts and gold body chains and was accompanied by male and female dancers.[29] Shortly thereafter, the song was performed acoustically as part of the 4Music Summer Scoop program,[30] which was again presented during the Sunday Brunch program on July 6.[31] Scherzinger also performed the song at Lorraine on July 9, 2014.[32] Scherzinger reprised the original version of the song on July 11 on Loose Women.[33] That same day she returned to play the acoustic version on The One Show, BBC program. Scherzinger, to continue to promote the single, gave a small concert at London's G-A-Y club, playing various topics.[34]
