Yorkhill Elementary School is a public elementary school in Thornhill, Ontario, Canada. The school is part of the York Region District School Board and teaches from junior kindergarten to grade eight.
Building
The school, which opened in 1987, was designed to look somewhat different than a typical school, and in someways more like a mall.[2] With a canopied entranceway, sloped roofs, skylights, and ample amounts of art on the walls;[2] the unique design (compared to previously built schools in the area), was done by award winning[3] architect Irving Boigon, and was meant to provide a more open "homelike" atmosphere for students.[4]
Hebrew school
The school also hosts the JRCC Hebrew School, an after school program, that provides classes once a week (Wednesdays) to Jewish students (who may or may not attend Yorkhill Elementary). It teaches Hebrew, Jewish holidays, Jewish history and more. The Hebrew school, which serves children from junior kindergarten age through to those in grade seven is affiliated with the Jewish Russian Community Centre of Ontario.
High Holidays and Jewish Russian Services
the JRCC operates High Holidays Services and other programs for the local west Thornhill Jewish Russian Community in the school since the late 1990s. the High Holidays services are open to all, with prayer books in Hebrew, Russian and English.
