York park and ride is a park and ride system operated by First in the English city of York. It was designed and introduced to relieve York's overcrowded city centre car parks. Many of the car park developments and bus priority measures have been funded by City of York Council. The service operates with a flat fare between all park and ride car parks and the city centre, and offering regular tickets and day tickets, which are valid for use on all First York services.
Services
The bus services are operated by a selection of Mercedes-Benz Citaro articulated buses new in January 2009 and Wright Eclipse conventional single-deckers new in 2008.[1] The previous bendy buses, Wright Eclipse Fusions,[2] have left the fleet. The bendy buses are used for their characteristics of being able to carry large numbers of passengers, although most standing. The services run very frequently, with buses every 7–10 minutes. There are five coloured overground routes, forming part of the standard First York services.[3] In 2008, the first of a fleet of new Volvo B7RLE/Wright Eclipses arrived, in a new silvery based livery.[4]
Ticketing
A number of different fare options are available on the services, to provide differing ticketing options for users.[5]
Smartcard technology is used on the network of services. Smarteds with a stored value can be used to purchase single and return tickets for a reduced price than the standard. Weekly and monthly smartcards are also available, aimed at commuters who use them as season tickets.
The final fare type is the "minsterCARD". This enables passengers to save 30p for each journey when £5 is paid in advance.
Most tickets can be bought on the bus, but the more expensive and complex weekly and monthly smartcards and minsterCARD are available only from the site offices.
Future development
Planning permission has been given for a new line of the Park and Ride scheme, extending from Poppleton Bar with a 1,250 space capacity.[6] The plan has attracted opposition from local residents, due to its use of a small section of farmland designated as a 'village green' in Poppleton. The council has insisted that this will be offset with a community facility. Construction is set to begin in early 2013 in two phases, offering a 600 space capacity initially.
York council also has plans to extend the Askham Bar site to increase overall capacity as part of its £22 million 'Access York' scheme.[7]
