Yishun Junior College (YJC) is one of the 18 junior colleges in Singapore, offering two-year pre-university programmes for students who graduate from secondary schools after the General Certificate of Education 'Ordinary' Level Examination. The two-year programme prepares students for education in local or foreign universities.
Yishun Junior College has been receiving value-added awards ever since 2003, existing as one of the top-ten value added junior colleges in 2005 and 2006,[1] and clinching the gold academic value-added award in 2007,[2] 2008,[3] and 2009.[4]
Unlike other junior colleges in Singapore which offer fixed subject combinations, YJC offers students flexibility in subject combinations for the GCE Advanced Level.
The students participate in co-curricular activities, community involvement programmes (CIP), and leadership development programmes. As far as possible, all students experience, besides their 'A' level studies, an adventure camp, an overseas immersion programme or service-learning CIP, and a work attachment with a local or foreign company. YJC has worked collaboratively with the University of Canberra to award scholarships for YJCians who have excelled both academically and in their CCAs.[5]
The college made sporting history in 1989 when its rugby team, formed a year before, finished runner-up to Saint Andrew's Junior College in the national school tournament. In the following year, Yishun Junior College was crowned champion by beating Raffles Junior College in the final.
The debate team of 1989 beat Hwa Chong Junior College and National Junior College in earlier rounds, moving to defeat Catholic Junior College in the finals.
Its clubs and societies have secured awards in the Singapore Youth Festival Central Judging 2011.[6]
History
The construction of Yishun Junior College was completed in December 1986 and the college was officially declared open by Mr. Tang Guan Seng, Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Education on 28 May 1988. The college began with 634 students led by 34 teachers.
