Yeshiva Gedola of Bridgeport

Yeshiva Gedola of Bridgeport is a Jewish study institution in Bridgeport, Connecticut based in the Agudas Achim Synagogue on Arlington Street.[1]

History

The Rosh HaYeshiva, Rabbi Simcha Bunim Berger, was born in Montreal, Canada and raised in Los Angeles, California. He studied in Israel for 15 years, and then moved to Monsey to start a Yeshiva.

The Yeshiva began in Monsey, New York with the study rooms housed within the building of Yeshivas Ohr Somayach. The Fairfield County Community Kollel joined the Yeshiva. It presently has six Rebbeim and over 40 full-time students and four separate dormitories, located in houses throughout the neighborhood. The school plans to expand their physical building, after recently gaining the deeds to the land it is on from Congregation Agudas Achim.

The Yeshiva is currently in a rebuilding stage and has been replaced by a group of sincere and dedicated Kollel men.[2] These men dedicate their time to further their own personal studies, and to develop the growing city of Bridgeport. The Kollel has been a very successful endeavor.

Programs

In its current stage the Yeshiva functions primarily as a Community Kollel. The Kollel focuses on two sedarim of advanced learning and a night seder focused on learning with community members. The Kollel gives many shiurim and lectures on all levels.[3]

The typical academic year runs from September to July. Students study in the Yeshiva in the traditional Lithuanian study method, as practiced by Yeshivas such as the Mir yeshiva in Jerusalem and Beth Medrash Govohain Lakewood, New Jersey.
