Yerramilli

Yerramilli or Yerramilly or Erramilli is the surname of Brahmins who belong to either Niyogi Bramhanas or to Vaideeka Bramhanas.

Vaideeka Yerramilli

This sect of Vaideeka Telaganya Brahmins belong to the Udimudi Village in P.Gannavaram Mandal in East Godavari District, Andhra Pradesh, India. Since they belong to the ancient Telangana region or Trilinga+gana region ( region between Kaleshwaram, Bhimeshwaram, Shrishailam) their sect is called Telagaanya sect or Telagaanyulu. The name yerramilli is assumed to be derived from the word yerra = red and illi = residence or place either in non-Telugu south central Dravidian languages such as Gondi or equivalent to illi = "this" or "here" in proto-Kannada Dravidian tribal dialect or equivalent to a word derived from illu (house) of Telugu language or equivalent to the suffix -illi (to be) found in words like tejarilli, vardhillu etc. of Telugu language. Illu is the noun form. Inti is the possessive adjectival form. Illi is the same adjectival form in any one of the aforementioned languages. 'm' is just an extra consonant. The name yerramilli or yerramilly thus means 'of red house' or 'red housed'.

Niyogi Yerramilli

6000 Niyogi (subsect of in) who migrated from Pasarlapudi Lanka to Ontimamidi in East Godavari District, Andhra Pradesh, India

History

Yerramilli Jagga Kavi (from the Niyogi sect) once wanted to go to Kaasi. On the way he stopped at Ontimavidi. There in his dream Kasi Visweshwara appeared and said to him "You don't need to go to Kaasi to see me. I am here in Ontimavidi". So he built a temple there and settled in that village. That is root of all the Yerramillis. In the historically familiar village of Vantimamidi there is an ancient temple of Lord Shiva which is few centuries old. In the year of 1852 Late Sri Yerramilli Venkatachalam garu the mula purushudu of the Yerramilli family who moved to Vantimamidi from Pasarlapudi lanka, had taken over temple responsibility. Since then the temple was being managed by the family elders and conducting Kalyanotsavam non stop even during worst recession time. The first renovation and reconsecration was done under his auspices in 1852.Subsequently in 1956 the Dhwajasthambam was reconsecrated. The family consulted Agaman pandits who opined that the temple need Jeernodharana and reconsecration. Beside the Idols of Sri Rajarajeswari, Ganapathi and Nandi to be replaced as there were cracks. New Idols along with Lord Subramanyeswara shall be installed. The main Gopuram and two sub Gopurams needed extensive renovation which is in progress now.
