Yamanashi (山梨市 Yamanashi-shi) is a city located in Yamanashi Prefecture, Japan.

As of July 2012, the city had an estimated population of 36,192 and a population density of 125 persons per km². The total area is 289.87 km².

Yamanashi City is located in north-central Yamanashi Prefecture.

History

The village of Yamanashi was founded on July 1, 1942, by the merger of two hamlets within Higashiyamanashi District. It was elevated to city status on July 1, 1954.

On March 22, 2005, Yamanashi absorbed the town of Makioka, and the village of Mitomi (both from Higashiyamanashi District).
