World of Warships is an upcoming naval action-themed massively multiplayer online game produced by Wargaming. The game features aspects similar to World of Tanks and World of Warplanes, having several types of military ships fulfilling different roles within teamed player versus player battles.
Gameplay
Battles will take place on specific maps with their own atmosphere, weather conditions and flow of battle, which are set locations taking place within the Atlantic, Pacific, and Arctic. To win each battle the player will need to employ different strategies, depending on the role of their vessel. Players gain experience and credits based on their performance within battles, which can be used to research and purchase additional ships of varying tiers as they progress through the tech trees of different nations. The types of ship available will be destroyers, cruisers, battleships and aircraft carriers.[1] These ships can be either real historical ships or blueprint prototypes from a variety of forces such as the Imperial Japanese Navy, Kriegsmarine, United States Navy, Royal Navy, and the Soviet Navy; other navies like the Marine nationale and the Regia Marina will also be featured later down the development path.[2] Submarines and torpedo boats will not be present in World of Warships.[3]
Divisions are the equivalent of flights in World of Warplanes and platoons in World of Tanks, allowing a group of players to join and fight battles together. Clan wars in World of Warships will be played out in the ocean. Clan wars are where different clans play a match against other clans in order to get land or maintain control of a region. Like World of Tanks and World of Warplanes, different sectors of the ocean can be occupied by different clans and ports that enables for ships to get out on the front.
Credits are the main in-game currency in World of Warships. It enables the player to buy ships, shells, modules and upgrades on their ships. Similar to World of Tanks and World of Warplanes, special premium ships will be available for purchase with gold, an in-game currency obtained via real-world monetary transactions by the player. Players can also use gold currency to purchase a "Premium Account" which gives them a 50% increase for experience and credits earned in all matches, as well as other benefits. Within the beta testing stage, tokens are used as a stand-in currency since players cannot purchase gold while testing is still underway.
Development
On August 16, 2011, the company website of Wargaming.net, developer and publisher of World of Tanks and World of Warplanes, announced World of Battleships, a free-to-play naval action MMO. It is intended to complete the World of war trilogy developed by the company.[4] On August 2, 2012, the game was renamed to World of Warships.[5] On November 14, 2013, the game entered closed alpha testing.[6]
During Tokyo Gameshow 2014, Wargaming CEO Victor Kislyi announced a collaboration between World of Warships and the Arpeggio of Blue Steel anime.[7]
Closed beta testing for World of Warships started on March 12, 2015, shortly after closed alpha ended, with the non-disclosure agreement covering the alpha being lifted at the same time.[8] Open beta is scheduled to commence once closed beta testing is complete, as the final step prior to the game's formal launch. On April 9, 2015, pre-order packages consisting of premium warships and access to the closed beta test became available for purchase by players.[9]
