The World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates is an annual event in the field of peacemaking, attracting Nobel Peace Prize laureates, high-profile leaders and organizations from around the globe. The Summit, created by Vadim Zagladin and the Gorbachev Foundation, is chaired by former Soviet President and Nobel Peace laureate Mikhail Gorbachev and co-chaired by former Mayor of Rome Walter Veltroni. The event is organized by Permanent Secretariat of The World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates, created in 2006: a non-profit organization based in Rome and Moscow. Summits have taken place annually from 1999.
The 14th World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates was scheduled to convene in Cape Town, South Africa in October 2014, but was later cancelled and relocated to Rome, Italy in December 2014, following several Nobel Peace laureates pulling out of the event after the South African government failed to issue a visa to the 14th Dalai Lama.[1] It was reported that China had thanked South Africa for not issuing the Dalai Lama a visa. China was reported as being against the true autonomy of Tibet, something that the Dalai Lama supports.[2]
The Mayor of Atlanta, Kasim Reed, on December 14, 2014 during the closing ceremony of the 14th World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates, announced the 15th World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates, to take place in Atlanta, United States of America in the presence of Mrs. Laura Seydel Turner, Chair, Sustainability Committee[3]This 15th World Summit is planned for November 2015 and will also award the annual International Children’s Peace Prize. [4]
In early 2015 Mayor Kasim Reed withdrew the city of Atlanta's support citing concerns citing with the CEO of Yunus Creative Lab, Mohammad Bhuiyan, and his wife and business partner, Shamima Amin. In April 2015, Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus resigned from his the Yunus Creative Lab that has been leading the planning for and governance of the 15th World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates. [5] The Permanent Secretariat of the World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates convened an extraordinary meeting in Rome on May 2-3, 2015 in order to take the final decision.
