Notes:

(1) First time track-and-field events fully disappeared from the sport of gymnastics.
(2) China and the United States tied for the third place according to the total number of medals. The number of athletes who placed fourth was then counted per country in order to break the tie. According to this criteria, the United States is considered the third best placed country in the competition.
(3) China and Romania tied for the first place according to the total number of gold medals. China, however, had a fourth place finish in the Women's Team competition, while Romania did not place in the top six. China, therefore, was considered the winner of the medal table.
