The Women of Distinction Awards are accolades issued by local chapters of the YWCA. The Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada version of the awards were first presented in 1983.[1] Marian Engel was named a Woman of Distinction at the Metropolitan Toronto award ceremony in 1984.[2] Barbara Der, a former director of the British Columbia Association for Children and Adults with Learning Disabilities, was nominated for an award in 1996.[3] Leigh Joseph and Leslie McGarry were honoured at the 1997 Women of Distinction Awards in Victoria, British Columbia.[4] Clinical psychologist Dr. Nancy Reeves received an award at the 2002 Victoria award ceremony.[5] In 2012, anti-human-trafficking activist Tara Teng was nominated for a Young Woman of Distinction Award at the Vancouver YWCA Women of Distinction Awards.[6] The winner of this award chose the YWCA program that would receive a $1,000 donation from Scotiabank.[7] At the 2013 Washington, D.C. award ceremony, Eva Longoria of Desperate Housewives fame was recognized,[8] as were five other women.[9] At that year's Metro Vancouver award ceremony, ballet dancer Chan-hon Goh and Teekay Corporation's Lois Nahirney were given awards.[10]
