Women in Aviation, International (WAI) is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization that is dedicated to providing networking, education, mentoring, and scholarship opportunities for both women and men who strive for careers in the aviation and aerospace industries. It provides resources for its membership, which includes astronauts, pilots, flight attendants, maintenance technicians, air traffic controllers, educators, students, air show performers, airport managers, business owners, and many others.[1]
History
Women in Aviation, International began in 1990 as the Women in Aviation Conference held in Prescott, Arizona. Due to the success of this annual conference, the organization was incorporated in 1994. As the founder of the Women in Aviation Conference, Dr. Peggy Chabrian was named the first full-time president and CEO of the organization in 1996 by its Board of Directors.[2][3]
Annual conference
Each year Women in Aviation, International has hosted its annual conference, which has grown from 150 participants in 1990 to an approximate 3,000 in 2010. The conference includes educational workshops, networking opportunities with various aspects of the aviation industry, a scholarship awards banquet, and the annual WAI Pioneer Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony. The conference also features several keynote speakers who are leaders in the aviation and aerospace industries.[4][5]
Hall of Fame
The Women in Aviation, International Pioneer Hall of Fame was established in 1992. Its purpose is to honor women who have made significant contributions as record setters, pioneers, or innovators in the aviation and aerospace industries. WAI solicits nominations from throughout the aviation industry each year for the WAI Pioneer Hall of Fame.[6]
