Women's Image Network Awards

The Women's Image Network Awards, also known as WIN Awards, are awards given yearly in the United States of America by the Women's Image Network (WIN), a non-profit charity, to "men and women in the media who promote gender parity through both their creativity and leadership."[1] Founder Phyllis Stuart has said that the awards are designed both to honor the recipients and to act as advocacy for expanding the role of women in the media.[2] In particular, they seek to support media creations that empower women and present them as complex, multi-dimensional characters, in contrast to the traditional gender typecasting.

In some years, proceeds from the WIN Awards Gala have been used to fund other WIN events, such as in 2006 when the charity created the Day in the Life program designed to mentor at-risk girls.[3]

History

The awards have been presented since 1993, and are currently awarded in 13 different categories.[4] They cover movies, television, and advertising.[5] In some cases, the awards are given to supporters of the industries rather than direct participants, as in 2006 when US Senator Barbara Boxer received a Woman of the Year award.[3]

Stuart has stated that her organization sometimes has difficulty providing full coverage of the industries because not all production companies provide the necessary support, such as copies of the movie (called "screeners") for review by the WIN judges.[6]

Lifetime achievement awards

In 2011, WIN created two new lifetime achievement awards. Elizabeth Taylor was presented with a special "Living Legend" WIN Award to celebrate her lifetime work in Hollywood and with AIDS activism.[4][7] In addition, Suzanne Fleisher Roberts was presented with a lifetime-achievement award for her long career of patronage of the arts.[8][9]
