Winslade is a hamlet and civil parish in the Basingstoke and Deane district of Hampshire, England. It lies 3 miles (5 km) south of Basingstoke and covers an area of 712 acres (2.88 km2).[1] The parish is at the foot of a wooded hill with the A339 running through it.

History

The manor of Winslade was held by a landowner Hugh de Port in 1086 and had continued in his ownership by his descendants for centuries until 1555 until the manor was sold by William, Marquis of Winchester. One of William's descendants, the Duke of Bolton, played a prominent part in the life of Winslade. William died in 1555 and the land was passed onto his son Francis of Bolton,[2] who as lord of both Kempshott and Winslade was fined 4d for non-attendance at the Basingstoke Hundred court in 1560.[3] Two years later he sold Winslade to his overlord, John Marquess of Winchester, whose descendants has continued ever since. [4]

Government

The hamlet of Winslade is part of the civil parish of Winslade[5] and is part of the Upton Grey and the Candovers ward of Basingstoke and Deane borough council.[6] The borough council is a Non-metropolitan district of Hampshire County Council. Hackwood Park extends into the parish, which altogether contains 89 acres (360,000 m2) of woods and plantations. Kempshott, covering an area of 555 acres (2.25 km2), was formerly a separate parish with a church of its own,[7] but was united with Winslade in 1393. It continued to form part of Winslade until 1876, when under the provisions of the Divided Parishes Act it was added to the parish of Dummer. Winslade's parish now stands alone covering an area of 712 acres (2.88 km2).[8]

Geography

The parish borders the Hampshire parishes of Old Basing and Lychpit to the north, Tunworth to the east, Herriard to the south and Cliddesden to the west. In the north it has a short border with Basingstoke along the M3 motorway

Church

The church of St. Mary in Winslade is a plain and rectangular building. Though the site is old, the church in its present form dates from 1816, and is a plain and rather unattractive building with a low-pitched slated roof, plastered walls and a gabled yellow brick tower.[9]
