Windermere is a suburb of the City of Maitland local government area in the Hunter Region of New South Wales, Australia, approximately 14 km (8.7 mi) from the Maitland CBD.[1][2][5] It is named after the Windermere estate.[2]

History

The original house Winderemere, was built of hand-made sandstock bricks by convicts in 1827 for wealthy and successful pastoralist and businessman, Thomas White Melville Winder, who first took up 4000 acres near Lochinvar. William Charles Wentworth purchased the Windermere Estate from Thomas White Melville Winder in 1836. A boiling down facility for the manufacture of tallow was built at Windermere in the depression of the 1840s. Extensive vineyards were also planted at Windermere. The Windermere Estate was advertised in 1848 to be let in small lots, with or without the Windermere House. Later, in 1851 it was purchased by Charles Nott. Winderemere House burnt down in 1884 and was rebuilt atop the original cellars.
