William Lanteau

William Lanteau (November 12, 1922 - November 3, 1993) was an American character actor. Among his best known roles are the mail carrier in On Golden Pond[1] and Chester, the mayor,[2] in Newhart.

Life and career

He was born in St. Johnsbury, Vermont. His first television appearance was in 1954 in an episode of Goodyear Playhouse. He later appeared in over eighty different television shows, among them The Donna Reed Show, The Ghost and Mrs. Muir,The Andy Griffith Show, Here's Lucy, No Soap, Radio, and Amen. He also appeared in the movies Cold Steel, , Hotel, Sex and the Single Girl, The Honeymoon Machine and Li'l Abner.
