Wienerberger AG is the world’s largest producer of bricks,[2] and number one on the clay roof tile market in Europe with 230 plants in 30 countries. The company also holds leading positions in concrete pavers in Central-East Europe and pipe systems in Europe. It is based in Vienna, Austria. Founded in 1819, the company's shares have been listed on the Vienna Stock Exchange since 1869 and currently have a free float of 100%.

By June 2007, Wienerberger was in the process of acquiring a majority in the construction company, Baggeridge PLC. The takeover was cleared by the British Competition Commission in May 2007.

History

Founded in 1819 in Vienna by Alois Miesbach (1791–1857) and traded since 1869 on the Vienna Stock Exchange, in 1986 the company started its expansion, which has focused on building materials since the introduction of Value Management in 1997. This transformed Wienerberger from a local Austrian brick-maker into the world’s largest producer of bricks within a few years. During this time the number of production facilities rose to a level of groupwide 230 plants in 30 countries including 31 production sites for the pipe systems.
