White Hall is a city in Greene County, Illinois, United States. The population was 2,629 at the 2000 census.

History

A post office called White Hall has been in operation since 1827.[1] The city was named after Whitehall, New York.[2]

Geography

White Hall is located at 39°26′22″N 90°23′57″W / 39.43944°N 90.39917°W (39.439466, -90.399248).[3]

According to the 2010 census, the city has a total area of 2.63 square miles (6.8 km2), of which 2.58 square miles (6.7 km2) (or 98.10%) is land and 0.06 square miles (0.16 km2) (or 2.28%) is water.[4]

Demographics

As of the census[5] of 2000, there were 2,629 people, 1,084 households, and 705 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,019.3 people per square mile (393.4/km²). There were 1,217 housing units at an average density of 471.8 per square mile (182.1/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 98.40% White, 0.19% African American, 0.23% Native American, 0.04% Asian, 0.38% from other races, and 0.76% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.95% of the population.

There were 1,084 households out of which 27.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.8% were married couples living together, 12.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.9% were non-families. 31.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 17.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.33 and the average family size was 2.90.

In the city the population was spread out with 23.2% under the age of 18, 7.8% from 18 to 24, 25.3% from 25 to 44, 21.5% from 45 to 64, and 22.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 86.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 83.3 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $26,552, and the median income for a family was $31,576. Males had a median income of $28,095 versus $20,143 for females. The per capita income for the city was $14,982. About 16.1% of families and 18.8% of the population were below the poverty line, including 24.7% of those under age 18 and 9.3% of those age 65 or over.
