Whirligig is a novel by Paul Fleischman. It is about a teenager who accidentally kills another teen in a car crash. As punishment he has to put up whirligigs in the four corners of the United States.[1]
Plot
17-year old Brent Bishop has moved with his parents to Chicago, Illinois. He goes to a party in an attempt to fit in and become popular. He decides to talk to Brianna, a popular girl at the party. She tells him to stop bothering her and to leave her alone. The entire group hears this. Chaz, the party host, mocks him for being "rejected". Angered, Brent drives away and tries to kill himself in a car crash. He crashes into a car being driven by a girl named Lea. She dies and he survives. Lea's mother tells Brent to build and place four whirligigs in the four corners of the United States on his odyssey to memorialize the teenage girl he killed.
