Where Are You (Bee Gees song)

"Where Are You" is a song written and performed by Maurice Gibb, it was his first composition that was released. It was included on the Bee Gees' 1966 album Spicks and Specks.^[1] "Where Are You" was included in numerous Bee Gees compilations. This track was finally released in the US in 1968.^[2]

Origin

It was written by Maurice Gibb in 1966 and was his first to appear on any Bee Gees albums. Although his another composition from that year is "All by Myself" which was released in 1970 on Inception/Nostalgia. The guitars were played by Barry Gibb (acoustic) and Maurice (lead). With John Robinson on bass guitar. Maurice also plays bass (probably in some songs). Colin Petersen on drums. It was recorded around April and May 1966.^[3]

The song had drawn Kipner's attention to Maurice's potential as a more than competent songwriter, Maurice felt more comfortable writing the music than the words.^[4]

Structure

Barry and Robin Gibb sings backing vocals on this song with Maurice singing the lead, as Maurice sings Where are you?, the backing vocalists responds singing the same line, the other lines sings by Maurice and then the backing vocalists responds are I told you, You told me, I love you and I'll be blue.^[5]

Releases

Mike Furber version

The Mike Furber version of "Where Are You" credits Barry Gibb as the songwriter (instead of the original songwriter Maurice Gibb). Furber's version was released in December 1966 in Kommotion Records only in Australia and was released on the EP of the same name. The backing band was Max Merritt and the Meteors, with the Gibb brothers singing backup vocals.^[3][7] Furber's version reached #93 in the Australia Kent Music Report charts.
