History
The history of the venue can be seen on the walls where tourists can see pictures of prestigious artists who have played and left their mark on this Irish institution. We can especially mention Jeff Buckley, Arctic Monkeys, Bloc Party, Kate Nash, Townes Van Zandt, Damien Rice & Allen Toussaint among many others. The pub is also well known internationally for being chosen for the scenes of the movie P.S. I Love You in which the characters perform a trip to Ireland. The pub is quoted in the film as follows: “Denise, take Holly to Whelan's, my favourite pub. There's beautiful music to be heard, beautiful people to be around”. The pub enjoys an international reputation that generates the arrival of tourists from all around the world.

Whelan's is a bar & venue frequented by local, Irish and international artists. Located on 25 Wexford Street, Whelan's is at the heart a thriving scene of bars and venues along Wexford St & Camden St and lies in the epicentre of Dublin city centre where all the artistic, musical and cultural life is focused. This pub is recognized as an institution in terms of music and concerts in the capital. The Backpacker's Guide 2012 describes it "In general the evening begins with a pint in this lovely rustic pub, always packed, before heading to the concert hall. The program includes the best traditional bands of the island and world music, in front of an enthusiastic and warm audience. An institution of the Dublin scene. "
The pub is open everyday and can accommodate up to two gigs in one night thanks to two stages. The first one offers a capacity of 450 people with a balcony and the second, smaller, is perfect for acoustic concerts in particular. Moreover, the place also offers a smoking area and an upstairs apartment for artists. Whelan's also recently unveiled the Parlour Bar on the top floor of the building where artists and music industry professionals can go for a cosy pint in front of an open fire at the weekend . There is free live entertainment & DJs in the bar 7-nights-a-week and the venue also curates late live shows upstairs at the weekend with a very popular nightclub in the main venue
