"Any Other Day" is a song recorded by American singer Hilary Duff. It was written by Duff, Jonathan Glatzer and Robert Lawson, and produced by Richard Vission and Chico Bennett.[6] It was released to promote the soundtrack to the 2009 film What Goes Up.[7] The song was the Duff's first release after leaves her previous label Hollywood Records in 2008, and the last single before her 6-years hiatus.[8]
Composition and release
Duff began writing the song in 2009, while on the set of What Goes Up in Vancouver, Canadá.[9] Back in the United States, she met with Jonathan Glatzer and Robert Lawson to complete it.[6] Richard Vission and Chico Bennett produced the song[10] and she was included in the film soundtrack, released on April 29, 2009.[11] Musically, "Any Other Day" has a indietronica sound throughout its hook while it presents more mature vocals by Duff in contrast to her previous works. The song also exhibits elements of synthpop and indie pop. Built on a beat, multi-tracked harmonies, the song's instrumentation includes slow-bouncing keyboard tones, and drums.[12] "Any Other Day" was inspired by a lullaby written by screenwriter Robert Lawson.[13]
On April 20, 2009 a 33 second preview was released.[9] The full the song was released on May 5 to digital download[5] and May 11 to mainstream radio by Amherst.[14] On June 24, Duff announced it would release a remix produced by Grammy nominated Richard Vission and released a preview.[15] On July 24, "Any Other Day (Richard Vission Remix)" was released.[16]
Critical response
"Any Other Day" was met with positive reviews. Jermy Leeuwis of Music Remedy give 2 and half stars and said the song was nice, amazing and unlike better from Duff's previous works.[17] Alex Kristselis of Bustle listed the "Any Other Day" as one of Duff's best songs and said was exciting and memorable.[18] Timbo One of R&B Junk said that "Any Other Day" was catchy, revolutionary and put Hilary in indie music scene.[19] Roberta Ferguson of Ear Sucker said the song was "pretty good" and "slow and soft".[20] The Melismatic magazine said the previous Duff's works wasn't good, but but "Any Other Day" was amazing. They also commented the song was "interestingly dark" and "still glitters with electro-y sparkle" and "I'm actually kinda interested to hear a Hilary Duff's new material".[21]
To Oh No They Didn't! the remix version was excellent and could possibly give Hilary another number one in the Billboard Hot Dance Club Songs.[22] However Nicolas Chan of Girls said the song wasn't great, the chorus was bad and said "Don't look for the chorus, sounds like a proverb: "Not bad, but could be better".[23]
