Westfield UTC, formerly University Towne Centre (UTC), is an open-air shopping mall in the University City community of San Diego, California. It lies just east of La Jolla, near the University of California, San Diego campus. Owned by the Westfield Group, its anchor stores are Macy's, Nordstrom and Sears.

History

Westfield America, Inc., a precursor to the Westfield Group acquired the shopping center in 1998, and renamed it "Westfield Shoppingtown UTC", dropping the "Shoppingtown" name in June 2005. Westfield bought both the closed Robinsons-May store and the freehold of the Macy's store in 2006.

Ice Town, one of the few public ice skating rinks in San Diego, is still up and running in the same building as the shopping center's food court. As of today the food court rink now houses Ice Skating, Hockey, Football, Baseball, Soccer, and many other sports.

Westfield UTC's 6 movie Mann Theatres franchise was there from 1977 to 1999, situated where the Sports Chalet is today.

Redevelopments

1984 Revitalization

The centers last major redevelopment concluded in 1984, with the addition of a Nordstrom anchor, a new mezzanine level, as well as two parking structures.

2008-2013 Redevelopment

In 2008 a one-billion dollar revitalization plan for the shopping center was approved by the San Diego City Council. However, due to the recession, the revitalization project was put on hold for several years. In 2011, the first phase of the revitalization commenced: the mall's food court was transformed into an indoor/outdoor Dining Terrace while the former Robinsons-May building was divided into three new anchors: a large-scale Forever 21 clothing store, a relocated 24 Hour Fitness sports club, and a 14-screen ArcLight Cinema.[2] Several notable new tenants were added, including Tiffany & Co., J.Crew, and Tesla Motors.[3]

In 2014, it was announced that a new two-level, 145,000 square foot Nordstrom store would anchor the expansion, to open in 2017. [4]

Anchors and Majors

San Diego Trolley

Sandag and Metropolitan Transit System are currently working in development to bring trolley service to the area and create a station which will serve Westfield UTC. The project will extend the San Diego Trolley's Blue Line north from Downtown San Diego to the UCSD area and terminating at the UTC station that will be built in the parking lot that is southwest of Macy's. The project is scheduled to be completed by 2017 and is expected to begin trolley service by 2018.
