Western Illinois University—Quad Cities (WIU-QC) is the second campus of Western Illinois University; the primary campus of WIU is in Macomb, Illinois. WIU began offering classes in the Quad Cities in the late 1960s. Beginning on January 17, 2012 the "Riverfront Campus" opened and WIU—Quad Cities became a full-fledged university. The Riverfront Campus of WIU-QC is along the Mississippi River.[2]

Profile

Western Illinois University-Quad Cities is the only public university in the Quad Cities metropolitan area, a region that lies on both sides of the Illinois/Iowa border.

The upper-division commuter site, presently located on John Deere Road in Moline, offers a public education for local students who are restricted by family and work responsibilities. Classes are scheduled with working students' needs in mind, and a variety of academic and extracurricular activities are offered.

16 bachelor's degrees, 11 post-baccalaureate certificate programs, 15 master's degrees, and 2 doctorates can be obtained through WIU-QC.[2]

Riverfront Campus

The $18 million project opened with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and program on January 17, 2012, attended by Illinois Governor Pat Quinn.

The first building on the Riverfront Campus, the former John Deere Tech Center, supports the College of Business and Technology, including the School of Engineering that was formerly housed in the Caxton Building in downtown Moline. The building is also home to academic and student services as well as university administration.

The $18.2 million first phase of the project has 60,000 square feet and includes 14 classrooms and four meeting/conference rooms.

The second phase, including five connected buildings, is expected to cost $42 million and provide an additional 90,000 square feet. Those buildings will include the Colleges of Arts and Sciences, Education and Human Services, and Fine Arts and Communications, as well as the campus library.[2]
