Background

High-school programs in Westbury Village were first established in 1921, with the first formal Westbury High School building opening in 1924 on Clark (now Rockland) and School streets. The senior high school moved to its current location in 1958. The old high school became Westbury Junior High School and then (1990) the current Westbury Middle School.

In the early 1990s, the Westbury district's ninth grade was moved up to the senior high school, which was previously 10th-through-12th-grade. The district's sixth grades, which were previously located at Powell's Lane and Drexel Avenue schools, joined the seventh and eighth grades at the junior high, forming Westbury Middle School.

Westbury High School's student population covers the United States, Central America South America, Haiti, Nigeria, China, India, North Korea and South Korea.

Education

Among the educational offerings are advanced placement, honors courses, Navy Junior ROTC, Liberty Partnership (in conjunction with Nassau Community College), ESL, Inclusion. SAT Prep, Saturday Morning Academy, BOCES, Marine Science, performing and fine arts, and educational services for students with special needs, including extensive Regents preparation and the 21st Century Grant Program.

Athletics

The school's nickname, originally the Green Wave, has been the Green Dragons since 1958. Westbury Senior High School athletic events are conducted at outdoor facilities that include Fizgerald Field, and indoor facilities that include the Reid Gymnasium.

Fitzgerald Field, which has been refurbished with new track-and-field facilities and lighting, was named for Thomas J. Fitzgerald, the district director of athletics from the mid-1920s to the mid-1960s. The Green Dragons' indoor complex includes renovations to the indoor pool that was first installed at the school's opening but was dormant from 1987 until the grand re-opening in 2006. The indoor facility also features new lockers for the women's and men's teams, and the gymnasium, which was named in 1994 for Westbury High alumnus and former basketball coach/assistant principal Martin S. Reid.

Westbury athletics has hosted the Reid-Robeson Basketball Classic since 1986. The event, created by Martin Reid and named for scholar/athlete and performer Paul Robeson, involves men's and women's teams from throughout Long Island. The classic has carried Reid's name as well since 1994, the year after the Westbury coach's death.
