West High School (Phoenix, Arizona)
West High School was the high school for the western portion of Phoenix, Arizona. It opened in 1949 and closed in 1983 amidst declining enrollment. The mascot was the Thunderbirds; colors were maroon and white.
History
World War II brought continued phenomenal growth to Phoenix. Already, the town had two high schools: the original Phoenix Union High School and 1939 addition North High School. More high schools, however, were needed to accommodate the area's growth in population. West opened in 1949.
Enrollment declines also affected West. With enrollment declining along with white flight, East High School, Phoenix Union and North closed in 1982. West closed in 1983. In 1984, North reopened and Metro Tech High School was established on the former West High campus in 1985.
