History

Wenzao Ursuline University of Languages, named after the first Chinese Bishop Lo Wenzao, was established in 1966 by Sisters of the Roman Union of the Order of St. Ursula as the Wenzao Ursuline Junior College of Modern Languages. The institution remained a female-only Junior College until 1980. After years of preparations, it became “Wenzao Ursuline College of Languages" in 1999, and the only college in Taiwan dedicated to languages. It preserved the junior college program in English, French, German, Spanish, and Japanese, two-year college and four-year college programs were added. There are also eight new departments established after it was restructured, and they are: Applied Chinese, Foreign Language Instruction, Translation & Interpreting, International Affairs, International Business Administration, Digital Content Application and Management and Communication Arts. The Center for Teacher Education and the Center for General Education were established in 2001. In 2007, in-service graduate students will be admitted to the Graduate Institute of Foreign Language Education and Cultural Industries, the Graduate Institute of International Business and Cultural Practices, the Graduate Institute of Creative Arts Industries, the Graduate Institute of Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language and Graduate Institute of Foreign Language Education and Cultural Industries. There are over 8000 students.
