Wardha railway station serves Wardha in Wardha district in the Indian state of Maharashtra. It is an important junction station on the Howrah-Nagpur-Mumbai line and New Delhi-Nagpur-Chennai line.

History

The first train in India travelled from Mumbai to Thane on 16 April 1853. By May, 1854, Great Indian Peninsula Railway's Bombay-Thane line was extended to Kalyan. Bhusawal railway station was set up in 1860 and in 1867 the GIPR branch line was extended to Nagpur.[1]

With the completion of the Kazipet-Balharshah link in 1929, Delhi was connected directly to Chennai.[2]

Before establishment of Sevagram railway station, North-South bound trains have to get their engines reversed in opposite direction which was very time consuming process. To avoid this problem, a new station for halting North-South bound trains was established in 1985, named Sevagram railway station. Since then, trains running on New Delhi-Nagpur-Chennai line halt at Sevagram railway station bypassing Wardha railway station. Due to this, passenger crowd is divided in two. Still some trains coming from Ahmedabad and going in south direction have to halt at Wardha station. These trains bypass nagpur station. South directio railway lines from Wardha and Sevagram stations merge at Chitoda junction.

Distance of both the stations is 8 km from Sevagram Ashram, 10 km from Pavnar Ashram and 30 km from Bor special tiger zone and wildlife sanctuary.

Electrification

The railways in the Badnera-Wardha sector were electrified in 1990-91.[3]

Amenities

Amenities at Wardha railway station include: computerized reservation office, waiting room, retiring room, vegetarian and non-vegetarian refreshments, and book stall.[4]

Station has been equipped with new Route Relay Interlocking (RRI) for faster train operation.

Besides large number of trains passing through station, two trains i.e. Wardha - Balharshah Passenger and Wardha - Bhusaval Passenger originates from Wardha station.

State Transport Department has provided bus service for passengers of Bhusaval - Wardha Passenger getting down at Wardha and wanting to go to Nagpur.

51 trains (including weeklies and bi-weeklies) pass through Wardha railway station.[5]

There are four platforms at Wardha station and surprisingly there is no home platform here like any other station. Everybody has to go over foot-overbridge to go to any platform. A new Wardha - Nanded railway line is being constructed. To cater for increased traffic due to this new line new platform is being constricted and this will be a home platform.

Sevagram

Sevagram Ashram, where Mahatma Gandhi, stayed from 1936, is located in Wardha.[6]
