Walter H. Taylor, III was the first head football coach on record for the Virginia Military Institute Keydets located in Lexington, Virginia and he held that position for the 1891 season. His career coaching record at VMI was 3 wins, 0 losses, and 1 ties. This ranks him 25th at VMI in total wins and first at VMI in winning percentage.[1] He was the son of banker, lawyer, soldier, politician, author, and railroad executive Walter H. Taylor, who was also an aide-de-camp to Robert E. Lee.[2]

VMI did compete in one football game in 1871, but no records were kept on the coach. The one-game season was a 2-4 loss to Washington and Lee University.[3]
