Walnut Hills Cemetery is a historic cemetery on Grove Street and Allandale Road in Brookline, Massachusetts. It encompasses 45.26 acres (18.32 ha), with mature trees and puddingstone outcrops. Many past prominent citizens of the town, including noted architect H.H. Richardson, are buried here.
"The newer of Brookline's two municipal burial grounds, the Walnut Cemetery was founded in 1875 and has grown to include more than 45 acres of land."[2]
The cemeter was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985.[1]
"The town-owned cemetery in South Brookline is a nondenominational burial ground for Brookline residents who have lived in town for more than five years."[3] It is separate from the older and smaller Old Burying Ground.[4]
History
"The Town acquired a portion of the land in 1874 (~30 acres), and Walnut Hills Cemetery opened in 1875... In 1926, Walnut Hills Cemetery expanded by 14.58 acres, when the Town purchased two additional adjacent parcels... the Cemetery is still active, with new internments [sic] each year."[5]
