Waleed Iqbal is a Pakistani politician, a prominent lawyer and a law professor. Waleed is the grandson of popular poet and politician Muhammad Iqbal,[1][2] and son of philosopher and former judges Justice Javid Iqbal and Justice Nasira Iqbal. Waleed started his political career in 2011, when he joined Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf[3] and is party's candidate for National Assembly from NA-124 (Lahore-VII).[4][5][6]

Education

Waleed after completing his high school from Lahore went to US for higher education, in 1988 he received Bachelor's in Economics from Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. On return he got his Bachelor of Laws from University of Punjab in 1994 followed by Master of Laws from Harvard Law School in 1997. Waleed also has a Master of Philosophy degree from University of Cambridge.[5][7]

Experience

Walid specialises in cross-border and local M&A, privatisations, corporate and project finance (particularly in the power sector), financial institutions, investment management, joint ventures, energy and petroleum (both upstream and downstream business), asset finance, IT, telecommunications and software development, and corporate restructurings. Between 1997 and 2004, he worked for two leading international law firms, Sullivan & Cromwell, and Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer. Walid returned to Pakistan and restarted his practice in Pakistan in January 2005. Walid currently serves as an Adjunct Professor of Business Law at the Suleman Dawood School of Business of the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS). He also a nominee of the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan on the board of directors of the Lahore Stock Exchange Walid is a member of the Association of International Petroleum Negotiators (AIPN).[5][8]

Politics

Waleed is relatively new to politics even though his both his grandfather and father remained active in National politics. His father was also a member of Senate of Pakistan. He entered the political arena on 8 November 2011 and started his political career from Imran Khan led Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), he will contest his first election in 11 May 2013 in Lahore on PTI's ticket. He currently also serves as a member of PTI's Punjab Political Strategy Committee.
