Biography

Early days

Khan was born on 10 March 1981, in a small village of Songiri in the district of Mandsaur, Madhya Pradesh, India. Wajid Khan is the first ever artist to acquire the patent for Nail Art. Born and brought up in a small village called Songiri which is 11 km away from district Mandsaur. Wajid is a young artist whose name is recorded in 5 World Record Books. The admirers of his art can be found from Mumbai to Dubai. He has enchanted art lovers, masses and elite class through his artistic nail art and sculptures. But there is a long story of struggle behind this journey towards his current stature. This story starts from the village from where Wajid has arrived and dazzled on the world map.

With his five brothers and two sisters, his childhood went like that of common children. But his heart was wavering and his thinking was artistic. He always tried to provide extraordinary presentation using ordinary things and because of this he was scolded by his elders quite often. When he grew up a little more, his urge to do something different lead him towards the field of art. He was very poor in studies and could not even recite tables. Just after fifth standard, his family got perturbed with his hobby. Farmer father was getting very upset while Wajid was busy in making world’s smallest iron. He amazed everyone by making world’s smallest iron press made with steel and iron. In the age of just 14 years, he made a small ship which ran on water. After land, water, now it was turn to reach sky and his next artifact was a helicopter. When he got appreciation for these artifacts, his dreams also got wings and when he reached his youth, he had already done 200 inventions including a machine that could prevent stealing of water. Everyone who saw these inventions was astonished. But due to the lack of proper guidance, these inventions could not get well-deserved recognition. Art lovers kept on coming to his house and his family’s resistance towards his art also kept on increasing. Finally after leaving school, Wajid decided to leave his house too and then the real struggle to get the proper recognition for this art and to earn livelihood started. He started his art journey with INR1300 given by his mother. Far away from the aspersions casted by villagers, Wajid started making technical Robots. From here, with the help of well wishers he started working for NIF Institute of Ahmedabad.[7]

And then he moved to Indore, the financial capital of Madhya Pradesh. From here, a new phase in Wajid’s art started. In a new city where there were many appreciators of art, he demonstrated his painting skills, but Wajid himself didn’t like painting much, his basic interest was to show ordinary things in an extraordinary form. He bid adieu to painting and picked thermocol. He started making thermocol arts from 1998 which was appreciated by many people and after this; Wajid tried his hands on such an art, on which no one had ever worked before. Tastily arranging and hammering tiny nails on cardboard, he created human faces. With time, he gained so much expertise in this, that black portion of nails and white portion of board created such an impact that it felt as if the created face wanted to talk.[8]

Inventions

In 1995, at the age of 14 he invented the world's smallest electric iron.[9] After this invention, he went on to invent a water theft device and a centralized touch-activated switch for household appliances. He also created a painting on canvas, which was apparently world’s first 3D painting. He has also created a robot and then again, in 2003 he invented a Light Sensor & Gear Locking. Wajid Khan has 140 inventions to his credit.[5]

Talking to Hindustan Times, Khan said,

The idea of creating a painting using the spare parts of automobiles came after I saw unutilised and mundane things lying in junkyards and then and there I thought why not utilize them in my next creation.[12]

Art with medical equipment

In 2014, he became a part of ‘Save Girl Child’ campaign and with medical equipment he created an artifact of an innocent crying girl. This depicts that a scissor which is used in stitching the wounds, and a stethoscope which is used to measure heart beats, is often the reason for the death of an innocent. Wajid has fearlessly shown this reality with the help of medical equipment and has given a message to stop foeticide.[5]
