Wahlburgers is a reality television series on the A&E network in the United States that debuted on January 22, 2014.[1] It is a behind-the-scenes look at the titular restaurant owned by chef Paul Wahlberg and his brothers, Mark and Donnie. On February 10, 2014, A&E ordered 18 episodes of Wahlburgers.[2]

Reception

Allison Keene of The Hollywood Reporter said that "only a true and abiding love for the Wahlbergs will keep viewers interested."[4] Brian Lowry of Variety said the show is "generally playful, but it is just empty calories".[5] Mark A. Perigard of The Boston Herald gave the show a B-.[6]

In 2014, Wahlburgers received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Unstructured Reality Program.[7]

Mark brings his Boston entourage to L.A., where he gets Johnny Drama an audition for his new film. Back in Boston, Paul must fend off screenwriters hoping he will pass their work to his brothers. He throws all scripts into a box, but learns Alma has been secretly reading them and sharing her thoughts with her Hollywood sons.

With the annual Dorchester Day Parade coming up, pranks abound in the Wahlberg family. Alma's grandson Brandon tricks Kari into wearing a hamburger costume for a fake initiation ritual, Nacho and Johnny Drama botch the job of painting Donnie's shed, and Alma decides to be in the parade.

During the New Kids on the Block's European tour, Donnie gets homesick so Jenny invites Paul to London. Paul attempts to get his brother to enjoy English cuisine, but ultimately cooks for the entire band.

Paul's busy day includes visiting an oyster farm, an interview with a reporter, and a skateboarding event for his son. Mark then insists he meet a powerful city developer to discuss the Wahlburgers location near Fenway. When the visiting reporter becomes interested in Alma's Wahlberg childhood stories, Paul worries about how candid this profile may become.

Donnie suggests Paul take up woodworking as a hobby to help manage his stress. Worried that Paul will hurt himself, Alma insists that her oldest son Arthur, a professional carpenter, try and protect Paul from any danger. Meanwhile, Mark lets Drama and his funk band perform at the Boston premiere of his new movie. A nervous Drama thinks his band may not be up to the task.

Mark notices that the restaurants are busy and asks his bodyguard Scott to go to Boston to look after Alma. Scott soon finds himself as Alma's new best friend. Meanwhile, pop duo MKTO visits Wahlburgers while on a tour stop, allowing Paul to give his daughter Madison the night of her life. Drama hustles himself an opportunity to perform some of his old music on stage with MKTO.

Paul and his brother Bob take their sons fishing for the day, but the leisurely outing turns into a wild paintball shootout between the two generations instead. Alma steps in to deal with the fact that Brandon is dating two girls at once.

An argument over whose job is tougher leads Donnie to challenge Paul to let him run the restaurant for the day. The work proves to be far more taxing than Donnie expected, and his experiments with new recipes do nothing to soothe Paul's anxiety. Meanwhile, Arthur offers Johnny Drama a co-starring role in an independent film.

Spinoffs

The show spun off Donnie Loves Jenny reality TV show, based on the newlywed Donnie Wahlberg and Jenny McCarthy's relationship.[26]

Wahlburgers is a casual dining restaurant and bar. The original location is in Hingham, a town just outside the Boston area. It is owned by chef Paul Wahlberg in partnership with two of his brothers, actors Donnie and Mark. It is the subject of the television series.

Origins

In 2011, an equity group that includes Mark Wahlberg, Donnie Wahlberg, and Paul Wahlberg licensed the name "Wahlburger" from Tom Wahl's for use in their own restaurant.[27][28] The family also owns and operates another restaurant named Alma Nove, which opened prior to Wahlburgers. Its name is derived from the name of the brothers' mother and the fact that she had nine children ("nove" being Italian for nine).[29][30]

History

The first Wahlburgers opens in Hingham, MA,[31] near Alma Nove, the pre-existing restaurant operated by Paul Wahlberg. The top selling item is their triple patty burger with Dirk Digger's special sauce.

The second Wahlburgers opens in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.[32][33] A soft launch occurred in early 2014 November, with the official launch happening on 15 November 2014.[34]

Additional locations opened in Las Vegas, NV, and Philadelphia, PA.[35]

27 new locations are planned to be rolled out presently, with 7 of them being in the New York City area.[35]
