WRDZ-FM (98.3 FM) is a Children's Contemporary hit radio[3] formatted broadcast radio station licensed to Plainfield, Indiana, serving the Indianapolis metropolitan area. The station, which began broadcasting in 1964, is owned and operated by The Walt Disney Company. The WRDZ-FM broadcast license is held by Radio Disney Group, LLC.[4] WRDZ-FM is the only Radio Disney station broadcasting on FM.[5]

History

The station signed on August 16, 1964 as WJMK-FM, broadcasting a Variety format, and was owned by James Barlow and his wife, Mabel Wiatt.[1][6] WJMK-FM was one of the first FM stations to broadcast in stereo. The calls WJMK stood for "James, Mabel and Karen Barlow".

In 1974, the station was sold to A&R Broadcasting, Inc. and changed the call sign to WART-FM.[1]

In 1980, A&R Broadcasting sold the station to Radio One Five Hundred Inc. (the owner of WBRI) and changed its format to Christian radio.[1][7] On December 15, 1980 it changed the call sign to WXIR.[8]

In 2003, WXIR was sold to ABC, Inc. (a subsidiary of The Walt Disney Company) for $5.6 million and became the Radio Disney affiliate on the Indianapolis metropolitan area.[9][10] On August 19, 2003, Disney changed the call sign to WRDZ-FM.[8]

In 2004, WRDZ-FM started to broadcast in the HD Radio format[11] and since then, is licensed to broadcast under that format.[12]

On August 13, 2014, Disney put WRDZ-FM and twenty-two other Radio Disney stations up for sale, in order to focus more on digital distribution of the Radio Disney network.[5][13][14] Disney originally planned to temporarily shut down the station on September 26, 2014.[15] However, will remain on the air and continue carrying Radio Disney programming until it is sold.[16]

As of April 2015, rumors abound online that IHeartMedia will soon buy the station, the last remaining FM station in Radio Disney's portfolio, and flip it to Country as "Big 98.3", matching similar stations in Pittsburgh and Chicago under the branding. These rumors only heated up as the company registered the domain Big983Indy.com the same month.[17]

Programming

Since 2003, WRDZ-FM carries programming from the Radio Disney network,[1] which broadcasts a contemporary hit radio music format[3] except weekdays at noon (12:00–1:00 p.m.) when the format changes to children's.[18] In addition, WRDZ-FM locally produces a public affair show called Kids Concern Show, which airs at 6:30 a.m. on Saturday mornings.[19][20]
