WIGGINS (UCI team code: WGN), also known as Team Wiggins in media, is a professional developmental cycling team based in the United Kingdom, which is set to begin competing in elite road bicycle racing and track cycling in 2015.
Team history
The team was founded by Bradley Wiggins, after much speculation in the latter part of the 2014 road season, in order to better facilitate his return to the track as part of his preparations for the 2016 Olympic Games.[1][2]
The team will have a reported budget of £460,000 which is comparable to JLT–Condor and Madison-Genesis. According to Cycling Weekly the teams management will comprise; Robert Dodds (President of XIX Entertainment – who also manages Wiggins), Andrew McQuaid (rider agent and director of Trinity Sports Management) and Wiggins himself. The team's first directeur sportif will be former Wiggle-Honda DS - Simon Cope.[3]
For the team's inaugural season the team will begin with eight full-time riders, with Wiggins joining on 1 May 2015, when the UCI permits in-season transfers. Those eight include; Steven Burke (2012 Olympic and World Team pursuit champion), Mark Christian (Graduate of the British Cycling Olympic Academy programme), Jon Dibben, Owain Doull, Daniel Patten (Raced for the Filipino Team 7 Eleven-Road Bike Philippines team as well as Cycletherapy in the USA), Iain Paton (Scottish Cyclo-cross, XC Champion and British Cycling Olympic Mountain Bike Academy programme member), Andy Tennant (Former junior Individual pursuit World Champion) and Michael Thompson (British Cycling Olympic Academy programme member).[3][4]
On 5 January 2015 the team was officially awarded its UCI Continental licence.[5]
In March 2015 Wiggins confirmed that he would make his debut with the team at the inaugural Tour de Yorkshire at the start of May.[6]
Sponsorship
Sky, along with British Cycling will sponsor and support the team.[7] The team's kit will be produced by Rapha.[8] The team will use Pinarello bikes equipped with Zipp, Fizik, Elite and SRAM components. [9]
