WHRV is the flagship National Public Radio station serving Hampton Roads. Licensed to Norfolk, Virginia; WHRV is owned and operated by the Hampton Roads Educational Telecommunications Association, a consortium of 18 public school systems in Eastern Virginia that also owns the area's PBS member station, WHRO-TV.[1]
History
The station began in the late 1960s as WTGM. Hampton Roads Educational Telecommunications Association bought the then-financially troubled station in 1974 and changed the calls to WHRO-FM in 1978. In 1990, the WHRO-FM callsign was moved to 90.3 FM, a newly created all-classical music station. NPR news, jazz and alternative music stayed on 89.5 FM under the newly created WHRV callsign.
WHRV's coverage area is not as large as other Hampton Roads stations due to its relatively modest 34,000 watt signal. Starting in 2009, however, multiple new full-power FM affiliate stations were signed-on to form a network of NPR affiliates serving Eastern Virginia.
