The W. P. Carey School of Business is the business school of Arizona State University and is one of the largest business schools in the United States, with over 250 faculty, and more than 1,000 graduate and 10,000 undergraduate students. The school was named for William P. Carey following his $50 million gift in 2003. In 2014, the W. P. Carey School was ranked 22nd in the world for economics/business by Shanghai Jiao Tong University's Academic Ranking of World Universities,.[1]

History

The school began as a Department of Commerce, that offer business courses and curriculum to students who are interested in business career. As the department expands, Emil John Hilkert began to serve as a dean for six months, although Glenn D. Overman was accountable for establishing most of the Business College programs and is generally recognized as the founding dean.[2]

Endowed in 2003 by William Polk Carey with a $50 million pledge from the W. P. Carey Foundation, the school was renamed, "W. P. Carey School of Business", and has quickly become an internationally recognized business school for its top-notch faculty, research, services marketing, and supply chain management programs. At the time, the $50 million pledge was the second-largest single donation to any U.S. business school, according to the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business.

On October 29, 2011, the school commemorated the groundbreaking of McCord Hall,[3] named for Arizona philanthropist Sharon Dupont McCord and the late Bob McCord. Opened in the fall of 2013, McCord Hall is a 129,000 square foot facility, featuring more classrooms for graduate programs and undergraduate honors students, technologically advanced team rooms, a new career center, outdoor assembly areas, and the latest in environmental innovation.

The W. P. Carey School of Business is accredited by Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB).

W. P. Carey offers two undergraduate degrees: a Bachelor of Science degree with option of nine business majors and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business with several concentration options that combines core business courses with a focus in one of 16 interdisciplinary areas from other colleges. The W. P. Carey undergraduate business program is ranked 29th in the nation overall by US News & World Report.[10]

A Bachelor of Science degree with majors including Accountancy, Business Data Analytics, Business Entrepreneurship, Computer Information Systems, Economics (offered in conjunction with ASU College of Liberal Arts and Sciences), Finance, Management, Marketing, and Supply Chain Management.

A Bachelor of Arts in Business, with a concentration including Communication, Food Industry Management, Global Agribusiness, Global Leadership, Global Logistics Management, Global Politics, Human Resources, Law, Public Service and Public Policy, Retail Management, Sports and Media Studies, Statistics, Sustainability, Technology, Tourism, and Urban Policy.

MBA Programs

McCord Hall opened in 2013 as a home for the W. P. Carey School's MBA programs.

The W. P. Carey Full-time MBA offers specializations in Financial Management & Markets, Information Management, Strategic Marketing and Services Leadership, Supply Chain Financial Management, and Supply Chain Management. The W. P. Carey Full-time MBA is ranked 30th by U.S. News and World Report,.[8]

A Professional MBA—with Evening, Weekend, and Online programs is also available at the W. P. Carey School for working professionals. Currently, the Evening program is ranked 22nd among part-time programs by U.S. News and World Report;[11] The Online program ranks 2nd in the nation 'U.S. News and World Report;.[11]

The W. P. Carey Executive MBA maintains a worldwide ranking of 13th, according to The Wall Street Journal,[1] while the Executive MBA in Shanghai, delivered in partnership with the Shanghai National Accounting Institute, is ranked 21st in the world by Financial Times.[12]

Additionally, a Custom Corporate MBA is offered to companies who seek a customized design to meet the organization's strategic objectives.

The W. P. Carey School offers a Ph.D. in Business Administration, with concentrations in Accountancy, Information Systems, Finance, Management, Marketing, and Supply Chain Management. Also, the school offers a Ph.D. in Economics.

In addition to the degree granting programs, the W. P. Carey School offers executive education to broaden personal knowledge on business topics or develop a company's workforce.

Business research

In rankings from the journal Technovation,[13] the W. P. Carey School ranks first among all business schools worldwide for authoring research in the Top 45 academic business journals with the most global impact. The rankings analyzed articles published in 2010 in the world’s foremost journals for business.

The University of Texas at Dallas[14] ranks the W. P. Carey School 27th in the world and 24th in the U.S. for research productivity, based on research contributions between all journals. In a joint study by Texas A&M University and the University of Florida, the research productivity of the W. P. Carey Department of Management was ranked 9th in North America[15] for the years 2005 - 2010.
