Vokab Kompany

Vokab Kompany is a San Diego, California based American Hip-Hop and Live-Electronic band; founded by vocalist Robbie Gallo aka Rob Hurt in 2006, and later joined by vocalist Matt Burke aka Burkey Baby (Native Root) in 2007 fusing the hip hop and electronic genres. Vikingo Burkhiser (bass), Jasper Skydecker (drums), Geoff Nigl (keys), Jesse Molloy (Sax) and Richard Galiguis (Guitar) comprise the rest of the award winning funk, soul and glitch hop band, Vokab Kompany.

History

Vokab Kompany was started by Rob Hurt in 2006. His debut album Liquid Language featured Killer Priest of WU Tang Clan. This album featured Burkey on two tracks - "40Thieves" and "Soul Sista", which served as the start of the collaboration between the two. Burkey's accomplishments include opening for poet Maya Angelou with his band Native Root and featuring on MTV Thailand and Bakery Music hip hop compilation T Hop with the band The Golden Triangle.

Vokab Kompany released V-Sides Vol. 1 (Kollabs and Remixes), a collection of collaborations, remixes and original songs, on New Kong Records December 17, 2013. It included features from The Polish Ambassador, The Grouch, Knight Riderz, Love and Light, Stephan Jacobs and an official Zion I remix.

Vokab Kompany and Crush Effect released VKCE (a self-titled album) on New Kong Records December 18, 2012. The album featured 10 Hip Hop / Electronic tracks with 2 singles featured in national commercials; "Back to the Past" (2013 Kia Optima "Blake Griffin Time Travels - 2006 Bench Press" commercial) and "Burn It Down" (Southern Comfort "Fiery Pepper" commercial). "Back to the Past" also featured on the television show Franklin and Bash. VKCE debuted at #47 on the Itunes Hip Hop charts behind only major-label releases from T.I and Chief Keef among hip-hop albums released that week.

Vokab Kompany Single "So Bright" featured in Kia Motors Summer Sales Event commercial (2010) which also appeared on NBC's hit The Today Show on January 14, 2011.

Vokab Kompany has partnered with the San Diego Metropolitan Transit System to create a tune for their campaign on Public Safety http://www.sdmts.com/movin/vokab-kompany.asp

Vokab Kompany was voted Best Hip Hop Band 2011 and 2012; Voted Best Hip Hop Album of 2010 for their album The New Kong, and was the first hip hop band nominated for Album Of the Year,2011-San Diego Music Awards.[1][2][3][4][5]

The New Kong, released October 2009, VK's 2nd album has features and production from Lateef the Truthspeaker, The Mutaytor (with bass player John Avila of Oingo Boingo) The Original Radioactive (formerly Michael Franti/Spearhead), Lincoln Parish (Cage the Elephant), J Boogie, and Alanis Morissette's husband, MC Mario "Souleye" Treadway (among others).

Quit Sleep, released April 2011, their 3rd album to date has features and production from Aplus (Hieroglyphics), Lincoln Parish of (Cage The Elephant), DJ Vadim, RadioActive (formerly of Spearhead), Luckyiam of Living Legends, Random Rab, Signal Path (among others). Vokab enjoyed immediate success as "The Local Break" on San Diego's premier independent radio station 91x for the month of May (the only hip hop band to do so on a primarily rock based station) and their song "Take you to Space" was noted as #30 on the 91x top 91 songs of 2011.[6]

Vokab Kompany has played hundreds of shows and festivals: Including; "The Do LAb Stage" at Coachella, Electric Forest, Shambalah, Summer Meltdown, Kaliedescope and Lightning in a Bottle, as direct support for artists such as Cee Lo Green, De La Soul, Cage the Elephant, Del the Funky Homosapien, Wiz Khalifa, Matisyahu, Pepper (band) at the Playboy Mansion, The Wailers Band and have toured as direct support for acts such as Umphrey's McGee, Collie Buddz, The Pimps of Joytime, and Zion I.
