Vishudhan is a 2013 Malayalam film directed by Vyshakh and starring Kunchacko Boban and Miya. The film tells the story of a Nasrani Christian priest and nun. It was released on 22 November 2013.[1]

The film was shot at Thodupuzha and nearby locations.[2]

Plot

Sunny (Kunchacko Boban), a young priest, is put in charge of a church in a rural area. The people there are faithful but poor. The church runs an old age home which is sponsored by the only rich man in the area, Vavachan (Hareesh Peradi). There Sunny meets Sister Sophie (Miya George). The two working sincerely in the old age home and in the process discover the motives behind Vavachan's philanthropy. He has an agreement with the home that he gets the unclaimed dead bodies for the medical college run by his son (Krishna Kumar), which is always short of cadavers. Meanwhile Sunny meets Animol, the daughter of the church grave digger .She is a bright student who aspires to follow in the footsteps of Mother Theresa but due to financial troubles is unable to continue her education.Sunny offers to help her by getting an admission in a Nursing college in Bangalore.Animol, while helping out to take care of an elderly woman from the old age home hospitalised in Vavachan's hospital witnesses her being smothered to death by Vavachan's son.Unable to hide her burden she confesses to Sophie and Sunny who advises her to reveal it to the police. But afraid for her life and her father Animol refuses and prepares to leave for Bangalore.

Sunny learns that many of the members of the old age home are not Christians but accommodated by Vavachan so when they die he can get their cadavers for his medical college. Disgusted Sunny decides to reveal everything to the Bishop.When threatened with exposure, Vavachan begins a smear campaign against Sunny and Sister Sophie that gets the sister, an orphan, thrown out of the church on the charge of having an illicit affair with Sunny. Sunny then leaves the priesthood to be her protector. They get married and eventually come back to the same place to live and prove that they have not done anything wrong.Slowly their relationship begins to blossom and they start to live together. They face the ridicule of the village but Pokkiriyachan(Lal) comes to their rescue. He helps Sunny get a job at a resort playing in a music band while Sophie becomes pregnant. Meanwhile Animol suffers as she has no way to pay her fees . She and her father knowing the difficulties that Sunny and Sophie face do not reveal their troubles to them. Animol realises that with no other way she has to become a prostitute to get money.While working at the resort Sunny encounters Animol with a stranger and realises the path she has taken. This disturbs him yet he does not reveal his knowledge to Sophie. On confronting Animol, she accepts the deed that she has done explaining that she had no other way.

Later he finds out that she is dead. Her father comes to see Sunny and confesses that he went to see Animol in Bangalore and found that she was a prostitute while being caught in a raid. Devastated by what his daughter had done and after realising what her father saw Animol commits suicide. Her father soon follows suit as he can no longer bear to live . Sunny decides to give all the evidence to the Bishop . He is intercepted by the police who wants to question him on the deaths of Animol and her father. He refuses to reveal what he knows only saying that he is innocent. Sophie comes forward and says that Animol had witnessed the murder committed by Vavachan's son and gives the copy of the evidence to the Inspector who in turn reveals all this to Vavachan.

They decide to have her stopped at all costs .Pokkiriyachan gets Sunny out on bail, Sunny confesses all what he knows to Pokkiriyachan who tells him to live for his family . On reaching home Sunny finds the pregnant Sophie shot dead by Vavachan and his son .Unable to bear the death of his wife and child he hunts down Vavachan's son and kills him brutally smashing his face beyond recognition .He then kills Vavachan and realises that Vavachan's grandson has witnessed the murder. Before Sunny can kill him too the grandson prays in front of him making him realise of what he was about to do in rage. The movie ends with Sunny breaking in tears embracing the boy.

Reception

Ajin Krishna of Oneindia gave a rating of 3 out of 5 and said it is one of the best till date from Vyshakh.[3] Times of India also gave 3 out of 5 rating and commented that the film has an unpretentious, lasting effect that comes out of certain sequences crafted with genuine moments so familiar to mankind.[4] Rajeevan Francis of Metro Matinee commented that Vishudhan is a feel good movie, peppered with moral questionings, romance and conflict, the movie makes for a relaxed viewing, that is pleasant and not too emotionally daunting.[5] Indiaglitz said that Vishudhan has a bold theme and will appeal to more serious viewers than the supporters of masala flicks.[6]
