Vizag Metro is a proposed rapid transit system in the Indian city of Visakhapatanam. The system is proposed to reduce traffic congestion as well as it is biggest of Andhra Pradesh.[1]

Metro A metro rail project has also been planned by GVMC to arrest chaotic traffic condition on the streets. After the proposal was submitted by the GVMC in February 2014, the Urban Transport Department gave in-principle approval for going ahead with feasibility studies and DPR. On 25 June Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) has called for global tenders for a Detail Project Report to be prepared for a 25 km stretch based on traffic density.[33] GVMC received bids from RITES, SYSTRA group, SREI infrastructure finance Limited, Hyderabad based Aarvee Associates; Delhi-based LEA Associates South Asia Private Limited and US-based AECOM Consultants for preparing the detailed project report. But later the project went under the scrutiny of a seven-member committee set up by the state government and the tender process had to be scrapped.[2]

Survey works regarding three corridors of Visakhapatnam Metro Rail project are on full swing as the DMRC is planning to submit its report by March 2015. A total Stretch of 30 km will be covered in first phase.

History

The Visakhapatnam Metro Rail system is proposed in AP reorganization act to reduce traffic congestion and reducing pollution.

E. Sreedharan, Metro Man, Advisor to Metro Rail Projects in A. P., on 21 January visited several areas of the city where Metro Rail corridors are proposed. He held discussions with officials of various departments on width of roads and traffic density. He saw the survey process and wanted the staff to expedite the process in a month so as to prepare DPRs in two months. Presently, three teams are working on topographic and traffic surveys.

Metro Rail has been proposed along 37 km in three corridors of the city from NAD to Madhurawada and up to Old Post Office and the Park Hotel junction covering the Railway Station, Allipuram, Jagadamba Junction, Old Post Office, GVMC, Siripuram and Andhra University.

Mr. Sreedharan visited Dwarakanagar, Railway Station, Jagadamba Junction, Purna Market, Town Kotha Road and NAD among other areas.

He spoke to the ADRM and the Senior Divisional Engineer on railway traffic, passengers alighting etc. He also obtained information on widening of roads from the Chief City Planner of GVMC.

Plan

As Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi announced in his US Trip that Visakhapatnam along with Ajmer and Allahabad will be made as a smart city in collaboration with the United States & rolled out plans for metro rail in Vishakapatnam. Chief minister of Andhra Pradesh, N Chandrababu Naidu also appointed Former DMRC Chief E. Sridharan as consultant to look into Visakhapatnam Metro .[3]

Detailed Project Report(DPR) is ready and will be submitted to Chief Minister Shri Chandra Babu Naidu in Delhi by Sree Dharan.
