Virginio Merola (born February 14, 1955 in Santa Maria Capua Vetere) is an Italian politician. Merola is a member of the Democratic Party and the current mayor of Bologna.[1][2][3]

Biography

Merola was born on February 14, 1955 in Santa Maria Capua Vetere in the Province of Caserta in Campania. He studied at the University of Bologna, where he graduated in philosophy.

In May 2011, Merola became mayor of the city of Bologna after winning 50.47% of votes in the local elections. He is the latest of a long line of left-wing mayors of Bologna.
