Virginia Beach Arena is a proposed multi-use indoor arena in Virginia Beach, Virginia. It is to be located adjacent to the current Virginia Beach Convention Center on 19th Street and just a few blocks away from the Oceanfront. It will also be accessible from I-264 and from the proposed extension of the Tide Light Rail from Norfolk to the Virginia Beach Oceanfront. It will mainly been used for basketball, hockey, and music concerts. The arena is estimated to bring over 200 new events to the arena with over 1.4 million attendees. Currently, the largest arenas in the Hampton Roads area are not large enough to host professional sports, large concerts, and over large events. The proposed opening date is the fall of 2015.
The arena's estimated cost is $421 million with $195 million coming from the City of Virginia Beach, $35 million from Comcast-Spectacor, $150 million from the State of Virginia, and $46 million borrowed. [3] The arena will be financed in Virginia Beach with higher hotel, use, and sales taxes while the plan is estimated to add over 1200 new jobs.
