Vinay Virmani (born January 24, 1985) is a Canadian actor best known for his performance in Breakaway (dubbed into Hindi as Speedy Singhs),[1] a Canadian hockey based film directed by Robert Lieberman and produced by Akshay Kumar and Paul Gross.[2]
Early life
Virmani was born and raised in Brampton, Ontario. He is of Indian origin and his mother tongue is Punjabi.[3] He is the son of Ajay Virmani, an Indo-Canadian businessman and Indian film producer. He received his early education from the Second City School in Toronto and graduated from York University.[4] He has also studied acting at the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute in New York City.[5]
Career
Virmani's first role was in a 2008 Canadian short film. In 2011 he co-wrote and starred in Breakaway (dubbed into Hindi as "Speedy Singhs").[6][7] Vinay then starred in the critically acclaimed Hindi film, David,[8] directed by Bejoy Nambiar. Vinay’s next film was the social comedy Dr. Cabbie, produced by Bollywood superstar Salman Khan and co-starring Big Bang Theory star Kunal Nayyar. The film was released in Canada on 19 September 2014 in 55 cinemas. It earned $350,452 on its opening day at the box office and Dr. Cabbie became the second highest-grossing film in Canada. The film earned $702,000 over the weekend.[9]. Vinay's next project will be 'The Steps'.[10] with Parenthood star Jason Ritter and James Brolin, the Canadian indie dramedy from director Andrew Currie headed into production in northern Ontario.
