Venus Isabelle Palermo[2] (born 8 February 1997), better known as VenusAngelic,[2] is a Swiss-born[6] YouTube personality, known for her doll-like appearance and fashion sense.[7][8][9] Her YouTube channel has over 750,000 subscribers, more than 117 million views and 160 uploaded videos.[10]

Early life and education

Palermo was born in Brugg, Switzerland. Her mother is Margaret Palermo, who met Venus' father whilst a teen studying in Switzerland. The romance was brief, and Margaret was left to raise Venus alone.[11]

In 2008, she moved temporarily to Japan. Whilst in Japan, Palermo was exposed to anime, a look which inspired her videos. She later moved to Tenerife, and whilst there, created her YouTube account in May 2010.[10] On that account, she began to upload videos of herself made up to look like a living doll, reciting instructions on how to achieve said look.[11] These videos rapidly gained attention and she was invited to sing with Japanese singer Rumi Shishido in August 2010[12] and also appeared on Japanese radio.[13] At that time she did not sign an entertainment contract in Japan but returned to Spain from where she continued uploading her videos to YouTube.

Seeing Palermo's potential, in 2011, her mother decided to move to Brixton, South West London with her[14] to pursue Palermo's career.[15] This decision turned out to be a good one, as one of her videos, the one entitled "How to look like a doll", went viral in March 2012.[15][16] As of April 2015, the video has amassed over 12,000,000 views.[17] Since then, her and her mother have been invited to and attended various international television shows, including Daybreak,[18] TLC Discovery[19] and The Morning Show Australia.[20]

Palermo moved to the Netherlands in early 2014 to pursue her education; she was unable to find a school in the UK, and had to be home-schooled by her mother.[21][22] As a consequence of her frequent relocation, she speaks English, Swiss German, German, Spanish, Japanese and Dutch.[13][14][23]

Career

Acting

In 2003, six-year-old Palermo took part in the Swiss movie production Ready, Steady, Charlie! as an extra.[4]

Contests and Pageants

In 2006 Venus Palermo won first place in the "Thai Beauty and Culture Contest" in Gretzenbach, Switzerland on the Loi Krathong Festival.[24]

In 2011 Venus Palermo won the model contest of Bodyline, a Japanese Lolita fashion brand, and modelled for them in 2013.[25]

Music

In 2013 her pre-release cover version of the Icona Pop song, "I Love It", took her to #71 on the UK Singles Chart.[26]

Youtube

She is known online as a "living doll"[27] and creates hair and make-up tutorials showing others how to achieve her look, which has been likened to Japanese anime and video game characters.[28]
