Venice High School is a secondary school located in Venice, Florida which educates students in grades 9-12.

History

Venice High School was built in the late 1940s. A new music suite housing the chorus and band was added; a new high school is currently being built (2010) on the same site.

In 2006 Venice High School was named an "A" school by the Florida Department of Education. In 2007 the school missed the 525 points needed for an"A" grade by 4 points receiving a score of 521 to earn a "B" grade.[2] The school has increased its graduation rate from 63.9% in 1999 to 84.7% in 2007. Its dropout rate is 1.6%.

Student body

As of 2010, the school principal is Jack Turgeon, a former minor league quarterback. Venice High School enrolls over 2,000 students annually, in contrast to the state average of 750 for K12 schools. Of those in attendance in 2005, 95% of the student body is Caucasian, 2% Hispanic, and 1% Asian and 1% African American. The school also has a significantly lower percentage of students eligible for the free or reduced lunch program compared to the state, 18% compared to 45.4%.[3]
